Why most WordPress sites rank below their weight

We audit WordPress installs the way we audit our own. These are the six faults we check first.

Fault 01

Three SEO plugins, zero configuration

Yoast, All in One, and RankMath — all active at once, none set up. Duplicate sitemaps, conflicting canonicals, meta tags written twice. Plugins don't do SEO. Settings do. And a default install is not a setting; it's an absence of one.

The builder that eats your speed score

Drag-and-drop builders ship nested div soup and a pile of render-blocking scripts on every page. Mobile speed scores crater. Google measures the slowness and prices it into your rankings. The design looked great in the demo. The demo never loaded on a phone in a parking lot.

The pages you never wrote

Your theme auto-publishes date archives, author archives, and a tag page for every tag anyone ever typed. Thin, duplicated, and indexable. Google crawls the junk instead of the money pages. None of it is content you chose to publish.

The update you skipped for two years

Outdated core, abandoned plugins, no monitoring. Then spam pages surface under your domain in search results — and rankings drop before anyone notices the breach. Recovering Google's trust takes far longer than the maintenance would have.

Schema on factory settings

The SEO plugin stamps generic Article markup on everything and calls it done. AI assistants and rich results run on specific, accurate schema — service, FAQ, breadcrumb, organization. On defaults, the machine can't tell your business from a hobby blog. That's an answer-engine opening almost nobody takes.

Fault 06

The bargain-bin hosting plan capping the site

Cut-rate shared hosting, slow server response, no caching layer, no CDN. You can compress every image on the site and the server itself is still the slowest thing on the page. Hosting is a rankings decision — one most owners made years ago, on price alone, and never revisited.

WordPress SEO services are the technical, structural, and content work of making a WordPress site rank — done inside the specifics of the platform. In practice that means consolidating to one properly configured SEO plugin; fixing speed at the cause, whether that's page-builder bloat or hosting; noindexing or pruning the duplicate archives and thin taxonomy pages themes generate automatically; configuring schema markup deliberately instead of leaving plugin defaults; building content architecture with categories as topic hubs; and keeping the install updated and secure so rankings aren't lost to a hack. Rankings that don't turn into customers don't count — the work is tracked to revenue, not positions.
The honest answer: the configuration matters more than the brand. Yoast, RankMath, and SEOPress all cover the fundamentals; a well-configured version of any of them beats a default install of the others every time. We use RankMath — it handles schema flexibly and does more without stacking add-ons — and we show clients every setting we changed and why. What actually hurts sites is running two or three SEO plugins at once, each half-configured, writing conflicting sitemaps and canonicals. Pick one. Configure it on purpose.
We don't quote before we look. The free revenue diagnosis comes first: what's broken on the site, what it's costing you in customers, and what fixing it is worth. Then the engagement is scoped to the actual faults and priced against the expected return. You see the price and the math in writing before a dollar moves. The honest metric isn't the monthly fee — it's cost per closed customer, and that's the number we track.
They can, and often do. Elementor, Divi, and similar builders trade markup weight for design convenience: nested divs, extra scripts and stylesheets on every page, and mobile speed scores that Google measures and holds against you. That doesn't always mean rebuilding — many builder sites can be cut down substantially with asset cleanup, caching, and disabling what the page doesn't use. But when the theme and builder are beyond saving, the fix is a rebuild on a lean theme, and we say so plainly — that's the web design service. What we won't do is optimize around a foundation that caps the result.
Yes — when it's maintained. WordPress runs a large share of the web, and its architecture handles almost everything Google wants: clean URLs, fast pages, structured content, schema, sitemaps. Every ranking problem we see on WordPress sites traces to neglect, not the platform: abandoned plugins, unconfigured settings, bloated themes, skipped updates. The platform isn't the problem.
